Client Case Study Rachel Humphreys (and 90 Day Business Launch is OPEN!) - When I Grow Up
Client Case Study Rachel Humphreys (and 90 Day Business Launch is OPEN!) - When I Grow Up Um, do you know that Ive coached hundreds of women since I started offering dream career guidance in 2008? And that these women are freakin rock stars, leaving soul-sucking jobs and traveling the world and launching creative, grown-up businesses and simply doing work that fits their lifestyle goals? Well ya do now and youll hear their stories firsthand in my Client Case Studies series! Rachel is a 90 Day Business Launch alum from this winter, and she has so much wisdom to offer. Enjoy! Why did you decide to sign up for 90 Day Business Launch? The idea for my business had been bubbling around in my head for a long time. I had finally reached the point where I knew that it was time to begin taking some concrete actions to get my idea out of my head and into the world, but I was overwhelmed by the convoluted muddle in my mind. I had information overload, and no idea where, exactly, to begin. Working full-time and undertaking a Masters degree part-time also meant that I didnât feel like I had a lot of time to spare trying to figure everything out on my own. I needed a way to cut through the noise both in my head and online (oh, the online rabbit holes one can spiral down when considering starting a business!). When an email appeared in my inbox flagging that you and Laura were offering 90 Day Business Launch, I knew it was just the structure I was in need of: clarity, a concrete plan, and accountability. What business did you launch, and how did you realize it was right for you? I work with helping professionals to prevent and repair compassion fatigue. My prior work with Laura had led me to arrive at the conclusion that this was the work I wanted to be doing in the world. My journey to this work is, perhaps unsurprisingly, based on personal experience. Despite having a deep interest in social work and psychology, I had never heard the terms âcompassion fatigueâ or âvicarious traumaâ when I was a practicing family lawyer. Ever since I learned about these concepts a few years ago, my gut has told me âthis is a thingâ, and we need to be talking about it. Awareness is slowly increasing, and I know I want to be a part of this conversation on an ongoing basis. I want helping professionals to know that experiencing compassion fatigue, vicarious trauma and/or burnout is not a personal shortcoming; it is normal, predictable, and able to be addressed. What was your biggest takeaway from 90 Day Business Launch? The idea of starting a business can be overwhelming. For me, the structure provided by 90 Day Business Launch was critical. The plan is everything! The plan gave me clarity, and brought a sense of ease â" I knew where I was heading, and what actions I needed to take in order to get there. It also provided me with a deadline, ensuring that I didnât get stuck in endless tweaking and perfecting. Also, I learned that taking small, consistent action really does make a difference. For me, I began getting up an hour earlier than usual and used that time to work on my business, before the dayâs distractions got in the way. What would you tell someone now that was in your shoes when we first started working together? Whats your best tip to allow them to make a grown-up living doing what they love? Those persistent voices that canât be shut down â" whether theyâre quietly whispering, or making a wild ruckus in your mind â" theyâre the ones to listen to, to pull the thread and see what unravels. If you have a voice calling you to start a business, take the opportunity to get out of your head and into action. Jump in and say YES now â" in three months youâll find yourself with something real. If someone doesnât know exactly what it is that theyâre wanting to build, you and Laura will help them get clear. If theyâre not sure what steps to take, you and Laura will distill it down to its essence in a detailed plan. Thereâs space to keep evolving. Get support. Doing it the hard way, figuring it all out by yourself, doesnât actually win you any extra points. I found that you and Laura were able to provide me with the fresh perspective I needed. And finally, whilst being uncomfortable is, of course, uncomfortable, it really is where the growth happens, where the juice is. Whats on the horizon for your business? Wed love to hear about any upcoming offerings or goals! I am delighted to have just launched one-on-one Compassion Fatigue Coaching Sessions for helping professionals, which is just the kind of offering I wish had been available to me when I was a practicing family law.
